Ihram for Umrah and Hajj: A Simple Guide for Men and Women

By Zikr Cabs team · 7 min read · Umrah Guides

Ihram is the sacred state a pilgrim enters before Umrah or Hajj. It is often described as the two white sheets men wear, but Ihram is really an intention in the heart together with a set of rules. When you enter Ihram you leave your ordinary life behind for a short time and become a guest of Allah, simple and equal with millions of others.

This guide explains Ihram in easy words: how to prepare, what men and women wear, how to make the intention, what to avoid and what to do if a mistake happens. Rulings differ in details between the schools of fiqh, so please learn from a trusted scholar too.

Key takeaways

  • Ihram is an intention plus a set of rules, not only white clothes.
  • Men wear two plain sheets; women wear normal modest clothing without niqab or gloves.
  • Enter Ihram before crossing your miqat.
  • Avoid perfume, cutting hair or nails, and arguments while in Ihram.

When and where do you enter Ihram?

You must enter Ihram before you cross a miqat, a boundary set by the Prophet ﷺ, if you intend Umrah or Hajj. The main miqats are Dhul Hulaifah (Abyar Ali) for people coming from Madinah, Al-Juhfah (near Rabigh), Qarn al-Manazil (As-Sail al-Kabir), Yalamlam and Dhat Irq. People already inside Makkah go out of the Haram boundary, usually to Masjid Aisha in Tan’eem. Read our detailed Miqat guide.

If you fly to Jeddah, the plane will pass over or near a miqat before landing. Many airlines announce it. Scholars generally advise wearing Ihram clothes before boarding or on the plane and making the intention before passing the miqat. Ask your scholar about your exact route.

Preparing for Ihram

Before Ihram it is Sunnah to clean yourself well:

  • Take a bath (ghusl) if you can, or at least wudu.
  • Trim nails, remove unwanted hair and trim the moustache, because you cannot do this once in Ihram.
  • Men may apply perfume to the body (not the Ihram clothes) before the intention.
  • Pray two rak’ahs if it is not a disliked time, or make the intention after an obligatory prayer.

Ihram clothing for men

Men wear two plain sheets, usually white:

  • Izar: wrapped around the waist, covering from the navel to below the knees.
  • Rida: placed over the shoulders.

Men must not wear stitched, fitted clothing such as shirts, trousers, underwear or socks, and must not cover the head. Sandals that leave the top of the foot and ankle open are worn. A belt or money pouch to hold the izar is generally allowed. Many men find it helpful to practise wrapping the izar at home before the journey.

Ihram clothing for women

Women do not have special Ihram clothes. They wear their normal modest Islamic clothing in any colour, though many choose white or plain colours. Hair and body are covered as usual. In Ihram, a woman should not wear a niqab (face veil tied to the face) or gloves, based on a hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari. If men who are not mahram are near, many scholars allow her to lower a cloth from her head over her face without tying it. Women may wear socks and normal shoes.

The intention and Talbiyah

At the miqat, make the intention in your heart for Umrah (or for the type of Hajj you are doing). Many people say “Labbayka Allahumma ‘Umrah” (Here I am, O Allah, for Umrah). If you fear something may stop you finishing, you can add a condition as taught in the Sunnah; ask your scholar how.

Then begin the Talbiyah: “Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk, innal-hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.” Men say it aloud; women say it softly. For Umrah, you continue until you start Tawaf.

Things to avoid in Ihram

Once in Ihram, the following are forbidden for both men and women unless mentioned:

  • Using perfume on the body or clothes, including scented soaps and creams.
  • Cutting or removing hair, and cutting nails.
  • Men covering the head with something that touches it, like a cap; men wearing stitched clothes.
  • Women wearing niqab or gloves.
  • Hunting land animals.
  • Marriage contracts, and marital relations or anything leading to them.
  • Arguing, bad language and sinning, which are always wrong but more serious in Ihram.

Things that are generally allowed include showering with unscented soap, changing to clean Ihram sheets, using an umbrella, wearing a watch, glasses and a belt, and sitting in the shade of a car or tent.

What if I make a mistake?

If you forget or don’t know a rule and, for example, use perfume by mistake, many scholars say there is no penalty for forgetfulness or ignorance, but you should stop immediately. For deliberate violations, there may be a compensation (fidyah) such as fasting, feeding the poor or a sacrifice. The details are a matter of fiqh, so please ask a qualified scholar or the guidance desks at the Haram.

Coming out of Ihram

For Umrah, you leave Ihram after Tawaf and Sa’i by shaving the head or trimming the hair (men), or cutting a fingertip’s length of hair (women). After that, all Ihram restrictions are lifted.

Packing list for Ihram

  • Two sets of Ihram sheets for men (so you can change if one gets dirty).
  • A wide belt or money pouch.
  • Open sandals for men; comfortable shoes for women.
  • Unscented soap, shampoo and deodorant.
  • Safety pins only if your scholar allows them (some scholars dislike pinning the rida).
  • A small prayer mat, a water bottle and a light bag.
  • Vaseline or anti-chafing cream without perfume for long walks.

Practise wearing the Ihram once at home. It may feel strange at first, but most men are comfortable after a few hours.

Travel tips while in Ihram

Keep your Ihram sheets in your hand luggage, not in checked bags. If you travel by road from Madinah, ask your driver to stop at the Dhul Hulaifah mosque (Abyar Ali), where there are washrooms and changing areas. Zikr Cabs drivers on the Madinah to Makkah route can make this stop for you.
