Taif Ziyarat Places: A Day Trip from Makkah
High in the Sarawat mountains, Taif feels like a different world from Makkah: cooler air, green terraces, fruit orchards and the famous Taif roses. It is also a place with a deeply moving story in the Seerah.
This guide covers the main Taif ziyarat places, how to plan a relaxed day trip from Makkah and, if you plan another Umrah on the way back, where to enter Ihram.
Key takeaways
- Taif is about 1.5 to 2 hours from Makkah by road, in the cool mountains.
- Its key Seerah story is the Prophet’s ﷺ visit, his patience and his dua.
- Main stops: Masjid Abdullah ibn Abbas, Masjid Addas, Al-Hada and the rose farms.
- Returning for Umrah? The miqat on the Taif road is Qarn al-Manazil (As-Sail al-Kabir).

Why Taif matters in the Seerah
About ten years after prophethood, after the deaths of his wife Khadijah and his uncle Abu Talib, the Prophet ﷺ travelled to Taif hoping its people would accept Islam. Instead, its leaders rejected him and sent people to throw stones at him until his feet bled. Resting in an orchard, he made a heartfelt dua, complaining of his weakness only to Allah.
When the angel of the mountains offered to crush the city, the Prophet ﷺ refused and hoped that from their descendants would come people who worship Allah alone (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). Years later, the people of Taif did accept Islam. Visiting Taif is a chance to reflect on patience and mercy.
1. Masjid Abdullah ibn Abbas
This large mosque in central Taif is named after Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), the cousin of the Prophet ﷺ and one of the greatest scholars of the Quran among the companions. He spent his last years in Taif and is buried nearby. It is an active mosque where you can pray, and a peaceful first stop.
2. Masjid Addas
A small old mosque marks the area linked to Addas, a young Christian servant from Nineveh who offered grapes to the Prophet ﷺ in the orchard after he was hurt. When the Prophet ﷺ said “Bismillah” and spoke of Prophet Yunus, Addas was moved and kissed his hands. The story reminds us that kindness can open hearts even on the hardest day. The site may be viewed from outside; access can vary.
3. The Al-Hada mountain road
The road from Makkah climbs the Al-Hada escarpment through dramatic hairpin bends with wide views over the valleys. On a clear day the view is breathtaking. There are viewpoints, and at times a cable car operates in the area. If anyone in your family gets travel sickness, ask the driver to take it slowly.
4. Rose farms and fruit markets
Taif is famous for its pink Damask roses, which bloom in spring (roughly March to April) and are distilled into rose water and oil. Many farms welcome visitors in season. The markets also sell honey, pomegranates, figs and grapes, depending on the time of year.

- Souq Okaz: the site of a famous pre-Islamic market and poetry fair, now home to a cultural festival in some seasons.
- Al-Shafa: a high mountain area with farms and cooler weather.
Coming back for Umrah: the miqat
If you plan to perform Umrah on your return, you must enter Ihram at the miqat on your route: Qarn al-Manazil at As-Sail al-Kabir, or the linked point at Wadi Mahram on the Al-Hada road. Tell your driver in advance so he can stop. Read our Miqat guide.
